Although Hurricane Alma developed on May 24, the season officially began on May 15, 2002 in the eastern Pacific, designated as the area east of 140°W, and on June 1, 2002 in the central Pacific, known as the region between the International Date Line and 140°W. The end of the season for both basins occurred on November 30, although Tropical Depression Sixteen-E dissipated on November 16.
