It was founded in 1872 in what is now Ueno district of Tait? under the name Ueno-juku. It moved to its present location in ?mori, ?ta in 1934, and assumed its present name in 1954 (a former "Tokyo High School" having become part of Tokyo University). It became co-educational in 1971.The University of Tokyo ( T?ky? daigaku), abbreviated as Todai ( T?dai ), is a major research university located in Tokyo, Japan. The University has 10 faculties with a total of around 30,000 students, 2,100 of whom are foreign. Its five campuses are in Hong?, Komaba, Kashiwa, Shirokane and Nakano. It is considered to be the most prestigious university in Japan. It ranks as the highest in Asia and 20th in the world in 2009 according to Academic Ranking of World Universities.
