While at Columbia University, studying playwrighting with Romulus Linney, he began acting in short plays written by Oren Safdie which were produced at the West End Gate. After graduating he moved to San Francisco to attend law school. While studying law he sang at many venues in and around San Francisco. At some point one of the law school deans heard him sing and encouraged him to pursue it professionally instead of Law and thus ensued a show biz career. With pianist Haruko Nara, bassist Tony Ventura and drummer Sean Swinney, Cassell performed the music of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and etc, in nightclubs in and around NYC.
