He succeeded Chu Ching-wu who retired from HKUST in August 2009. Tony Chan worked at UCLA and at the National Science Foundation. He is a co-founder of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics, an NSF-funded institute at UCLA. He has been listed as an ISI Highly Cited Author in Mathematics by the ISI Web of Knowledge, Thomson Scientific Company.
