Most tornadoes form in the U.S., although some events may take place internationally, particularly in parts of neighboring southern Canada during the Northern Hemisphere`s summer season. There were 2,192 tornadoes reported in the United States (of which 1,691 were confirmed), with 125 confirmed fatalities. This made 2008 the deadliest year in that country since 1998. Nine other fatalities have been reported elsewhere in the world; three in France, two each in Bangladesh and Poland, and one each in Russia and China. With 1,691 confirmed tornadoes, 2008 ranked as the second most active US tornado season on record; only 2004 had more tornadoes with 1,817 confirmed tornadoes.
