High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! UDFy-38135539 (also known as "HUDF.YD3") is the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) classification for a galaxy which (as of October 2010) is the most distant object in the universe observed from Earth, and thus the most distant object known to have existed. It was initially discovered by three teams in September 2009 in sensitive infrared Hubble Space Telescope images, and reported in the Astrophysical Journal, and the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. These teams independently identified this source as a likely extremely distant galaxy due to it having no measurable light at visible wavelengths, on account of absorption by hydrogen gas along the line of sight. The image data was released to the scientific community, which led to the galaxy's detection by the teams of Bouwens, Bunker and McLure, and subsequent spectroscopic confirmation by the team of Lehnert and colleagues.
