The United States of America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Though home to a little less than 5% of the world's population, the US holds 25% of the world's prisoners.According to a US Department of Justice report published in 2006, over 7.2 million people were at that time in prison, on probation, or on parole. That means roughly 1 in every 32 Americans are held by the justice system. According to the International Centre of Prison Studies at King's College London, of that 7.2 million, 2.3 million are in prison. The People's Republic of China comes in second place with 1.6 million, despite its population being over four times that of the United States.
