The University of Eastern Finland (Finnish: Ita-Suomen yliopisto) is a university in Finland with three campuses in Joensuu, Kuopio, and Savonlinna. It was formed in 2010 by a merger of two previously independent universities.The University of Eastern Finland was formed through a merger of two formerly independent universities in Joensuu and Kuopio. These ceased to exist when the University of Eastern Finland began to operate in January 2010.Ongoing reform in Finnish university legislation has affected the process. The reform will transform universities' legal status from entities under the state budget to an independent body corporate. This allows increased autonomy in university finances and administration. University of Eastern Finland has been built with an assumption that its legal status will be a body corporate under public law. New university legislation was finalized on June 16, 2009 by the Finnish Parliament.
