High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! USCS Phoenix was a schooner that served as a survey ship in the United States Coast Survey from 1845 to 1867. The Coast Survey commissioned Phoenix in 1845 and operated her in its Atlantic fleet throughout her career. Her first commanding officer, Lieutenant Commanding Carlile P. Patterson (1816-1881), conducted the first hydrographic surveys for the Coast Survey in the Gulf of Mexico. A tornado struck Phoenix while she rode at anchor in Mississippi Sound on the United States Gulf Coast on the night of 31 March 1854, sinking her. She was raised, repaired, and returned to service. Phoenix was retired from service in 1857.
