She was put into service by the Union Navy to patrol navigable waterways of the Confederacy to prevent the South from trading with other countries. The Confederate privateer schooner Beauregard (ex-Priscilla C. Ferguson) was captured by William G. Anderson in the Bahama Channel 12 November 1861; purchased from the Key West, Florida, Prize Court 24 February 1862; and commissioned 28 March 1862, Acting Master D. Stearns in command.
