The Doyle was named after Vice Admiral James Henry Doyle (1897-1982) Vice Admiral Doyle was most known for his contributions during the Korean War as Commander Amphibious Group One. Her keel was laid down by Bath Iron Works Corporation of Bath, Maine, on 23 October 1981. She was launched on 22 May 1982 and commissioned on 21 May 1983.
