Hopping, killed in a raid on Roi Island on 1 February 1942, the first aircraft squadron commander to lose his life in World War II. Hopping was launched at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia, on 9 March 1943, sponsored by Mrs. H. L. Hopping, widow of Lieutenant Commander Hopping; and commissioned on 21 May 1943, with Lieutenant Commander F. D. Giambattista in command.
