Her keel was laid down on 18 January 1919 by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation in Quincy, Massachusetts. She was launched on 27 October 1920 sponsored by Miss Barbara Sears, and commissioned on 30 October 1923 with Lieutenant Joseph Y. Dreisonstok in command.
