She was of the VC2-S-AP5 Victory ship design type. Sherburne was named for Sherburne County, Minnesota. She was later converted and renamed USS Range Sentinel (AGM-22) a missile range instrumentation ship. Sherburne (APA-205) was laid down under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull MCV-553) on 18 May 1944 by Yard Number 2, the Permanente Metals Corporation, Richmond, California; launched on 10 July 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Mary Sernach; and commissioned on 20 September 1944, Commander Lannis A. Parker in command.
