He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada in 1995. Currently, he holds the titles of Hammond Vinton Hayes Senior Fellow of Electrical Engineering and Perkins Professor of Applied Mathematics at Harvard University's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Tarokh is responsible for a number of inventions. In particular, he is the principal inventor of space–time codes.
