Vicnet began in 1994 as a joint State Library of Victoria and RMIT University project to investigate the impact of the internet and online information on public libraries and community in Victoria. Vicnet developed as an ISP in its formative years which enabled it to grow a range of other services including delivery of project management service and internet training services for community. Over time Vicnet a division of the State Library of Victoriaand is now an important part of the libraries vision. Vicnet was created as an initiative of then Premier of Victoria Jeff Kennett.
