VIDIX (video interface for *nix) is a portable interface which was designed and introduced as an interface to userspace drivers to provide DGA (Direct Graphics Access).The idea to create Vidix was born as an alternative to the poorly designed linux-kernel based drivers from the mplayerhq project. For a long time vidix lived within the mplayerhq project then later it lived within the mplayerxp project. At that early time it was not seen as an independent project. During that time linux and many other unix clones lacked quality drivers for the video subsystems. Almost all video-related documentation was under NDA at the time and many hackers had to code their drivers blindly.
