The Villa Romana Prize, which has been awarded since 1905, is the oldest German art prize. The Villa Romana was acquired in 1905 by Max Klinger for 60,000 gold liras. Klinger then arranged for the German Kunstlerbund where artists stayed, in particular the scholars of the Villa Romana Prize. In 1906 in Leipzig, the Villa Romana club, founded by Klinger, earned the Kunstlerhaus Villa Romana. In 1926 the club was re-established. The club changed status into a foundation, based in Dusseldorf. Annually, three to five talented visual artists reside in charge of the Villa Romana, and use the local studio (More recently, is also a stipend.)
