The band was founded by the former Dominus vocalist and guitarist Michael Poulsen. The first line up was completed by guitarist Teddy Vang, bassist Anders Kj lholm and drummer Jon Larsen. Volbeat recorded a self-titled demo. Guitarist Teddy Vang was replaced by Franz Gottschalk, with whom the band recorded their second demo Beat the Meat and their first two albums The Strength/The Sound/The Songs and Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil.
