Dexter received a diploma in ceramics from the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and continued his studies at the Swedish School of Arts and Crafts on a scholarship. Dexter is recognized by the ceramics community as a pioneer in Raku ware technique, as an educator, and also as a writer. from 1968-1974, he was head of the art ceramics department at the Kootenay School of the Arts in B.C., Canada. Most of his work consists of vessel and plate forms decorated with dancing figures, a motif inspired from working with Paul Soldner.
