This book paper will explore what an Indigenous feminism is, the debates and dialogue that exist within Indigenous communities, as well as the scholarship and activism surrounding feminist theory, its use, and appropriateness for Indigenous communities. As a starting point, I will use Making Space for Indigenous Feminism to explore the complexities of Indigenous women's conceptions of feminism, linking the authors in the book to both past and present understandings and conceptions of feminism, with particular attention being paid to the tensions and debates that exist within Indigenous feminist discourses. Through an in-depth textual analysis of some Indigenous feminist writings, the paper will explore connections between Indigenous feminism and other forms of feminist discourse, while exploring the ways in which feminism(s) are in constant dialogue with one another.
