From its inception in 1982, it was sponsored by the governing body for women`s lacrosse, the International Federation of Women`s Lacrosse Associations, until that body merged in 2008 with the former governing body for men`s lacrosse, the International Lacrosse Federation. Starting with the 2009 event, it will be sponsored by the sport`s new unified governing body, the Federation of International Lacrosse. The latest World Cup was held from 17-27 June 2009 in the Czech Republic and was won by the United States with a one-goal win over arch-rivals Australia.
