High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Worcester Castle was a fortified enclosure built in 1069 in Worcester, England by the Norman Sheriff Urse d'Abetot. Constructed in timber it was of motte-and-bailey type, with two baileys, situated on the eastern bank of the River Severn in the south west corner of the borough. The outer bailey encroached on the cemetery of the Priory of St Mary, for which depredation Urse was cursed by the Archbishop of York. Castles such as Worcester were viewed by the native English as a symbol of oppression.
