The name was published in 2000 and has therefore been recognized only in recent taxonomies. The APG II system, of 2003 does recognize this family and places it in the order Asparagales, in the clade monocots. The single genus in the family, Xeronema, with two species, has been variously placed in the family Asphodelaceae or the family Hemerocallidaceae in other taxonomic systems.
