High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Xestospongia muta, known as giant barrel sponge, is the largest species of sponge, found in the Caribbean. It grows at depths of 10 meters or more. Its colour is brown-grey to reddish. The sponge texture is hard or stony. There is little scientific information about the species, although it has been monitored since 1997. Despite its prominence, high biomass, importance to habitat complexity and reef health, very little is known about the basic biology of this massive sponge, including rates of mortality and recruitment, reproduction, growth and age. Like reef corals, this sponge is subject to bleaching and subsequent mortality.
