The two stars are separated by 0.46° on the sky. The star ? Sagittarii in particular carries the proper name Nergal, which is the name of an Assyrian or Babylonian deity that was portrayed within parts of Sagittarius. Because they are close to the ecliptic, these stars can be occulted by the Moon and very rarely by planets. The last occultation of ? Sagittarii by a planet took place on 22 December 1810, when it was occulted by Venus.
