Most of the information on his origins comes from an inscription on the painting of Yueyang Tower. Xia Yong, style name "Ming Yuan", was a native of Qian Tang in the Zhejiang province. He is known for his paintings of palaces and temples. His painting style is based on that of Wang Zhenpeng. The Yuan Dynasty, or Great Yuan Empire was a ruling dynasty founded by the Mongol leader Kublai Khan, who ruled most of present-day China, all of modern Mongolia and its surrounding areas, lasting officially from 1271 to 1368.
