Xie was first arrested in 1955 because of his loyalty and obedience to the Pope, and was jailed again from 1958–1980, from 1984–1987 and finally from 1990–1992; spending 28 years in prison. He became a bishop in 1984. Xie died from leukaemia on 25 August 2005 at the age of 88.
