She was President of Fudan University from 1983 to 1988, and remained as Advisor to the University from 1988 until her death. She helped to set up the University's Centre for American Studies and founded its Modern Physics Institute in 1977. Xie also served as a member in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China from 1982 to 1992. Xie Xide is a Smith College alumna from the Class of 1949. A physicist is a scientist who studies or practices physics. Physicists study a wide range of physical phenomena in many branches of physics spanning all length scales: from sub-atomic particles of which all ordinary matter is made (particle physics) to the behavior of the material Universe as a whole (cosmology).
