It improves performance and scalability on modern hardware and includes a variety of other features useful in high performance environments. It is backwards compatible, and can be used as a drop-in replacement for standard InnoDB. It is included in the MariaDB, OurDelta, and Percona Server versions of MySQL. Online, non-blocking backups and other functionality are available through XtraBackup, and in fact XtraDB's data files can be backed up with InnoDB's own hot backup tool, as well as standard backup tools such as mysqldump.
