High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Yard with Lunatics is oil on tinplate painting completed between 1793 and 1794 by the Spanish artist Francisco Goya. Goya said that the painting was informed by scenes of institutions witnessed as a youth in Zaragoza. Set in a lunatic asylum, the work was painted at a time when asylums were no more than "holes in the social surface, small dumps into which the psychotic could be thrown without the smallest attempt to discover, classify, or treat the nature of their illness." It forms a stark portrait of the shackled inmates, who are enclosed by high walls and a heavy stone arch. Figures fight and grin idiotically or huddle in despair, while all are bathed in grey and green light. In a 1794 letter to his friend Bernardo de Yriarte, Goya wrote that the painting shows, "a yard with lunatics and two of them fighting completely naked while their warder beats them, and other in sacks".
