High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Yorcard is the name of a pilot electronic smartcard ticketing for use in South / West Yorkshire. The pilot was commissioned by the Department for Transport and is being carried out by Yorcard Ltd on behalf of the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. The pilot's aim is to gather information to inform the DfT's work on multi-modal smartcards. The pilot, on ten school bus services and seven regular bus services in Sheffield, began in September 2007 with children from several schools. It was extended to some rail services in December 2008. The system is in some ways similar to the Oyster Card used on public transport by Transport for London. Like the Oyster card, the Yorcard will be an anonymous card and will therefore be transferable. However for the pilot some cards, such as the child concessionary passes and the Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons National Concession passes, are photo ID passes to enable them to be used on services other than those involved in the pilot scheme.
