"You Are My Friend" is a ballad co-written and recorded by American singer Patti LaBelle, released as the second single off her self-titled debut album, in 1978 on the Epic label. While it only reached as high as number sixty-one on the Billboard Hot-Selling Soul Singles chart upon its initial release, it has gone on to become one of the singer's signature anthems. By the late summer of 1977, Patti LaBelle was at a personal and professional crossroads. The 33-year-old veteran singer had spent the first 16 years of her career as lead singer of Labelle, which started in the early 1960s as "Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles" before changing their name to reflect their mixture of soul, funk and glam rock in the mid-1970s. Following the group's departure, LaBelle was also struggling to come to terms to her then eight-year marriage to Armstead Edwards. Figuring the couple would implode, Labelle and Edwards went through marriage counseling.
