High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Yubari Melon is a very expensive Japanese melon. They are grown in Yubari, Hokkaido, a small populated town which is close to Sapporo. They are traditionally for summer gift giving, and usually come in or with a wood box for gift packaging. The orange-fleshed Yubari melon is similar in appearance and size to the common cantaloupe. A top grade melon is to be perfectly round and have perfectly smooth skin. A portion of the trimmed stem is left on top for appearance. Prices range from 6,000 to 15,000 yen (which would be $70 to $175 in the US). The best ones are within the range of costing 20,000 yen ($233 US.), and the price record at auction was established in 2008 at 2.5 million yen ($26,000) for one set of two melons.
