She was one of the Ramillies class built to update the Navy and replace ships lost following the Seven Years` War. She was first commissioned in 1771 under Captain Richard Bickerton as a guard ship for the Medway. She served through two wars before her loss in 1800 when she struck a ledge of rocks off the Quiberon Peninsula; while she was pulled off the rocks, she was so seriously damaged that she foundered after all her complement were saved.
