United States, 208 U.S. 161 (1908), is a United States Supreme Court case which upheld "yellow-dog" contracts that forbade workers from joining labor unions. The decision reaffirmed the doctrine of freedom of contract which was first recognized by the Court in Allgeyer v. Louisiana (1897). For this reason, Adair is often seen as defining what has come to be known as the Lochner era, a period in American legal history in which the Supreme Court tended to invalidate legislation aimed at regulating business.

He played college football with Army and was selected as a first-team All-American in 1914. He became a career officer in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of Major General. He was lifelong friends with West Point classmate Dwight Eisenhower and, during World War II, he commanded the 14th Armored Division from 1942 to 1944 and the 1st Armored Division from 1944 to 1945 during the Italian Campaign.
