The 1965 Pacific hurricane season officially started May 15, 1965 in the eastern Pacific, and June 1, 1965 in the central Pacific, and lasted until November 30, 1965. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the northeast Pacific Ocean. A total of ten systems were observed. The most notable storm was Tropical Storm Hazel, which killed six people in Mexico.

The population has declined 80% in the last ten years and this species is now critically endangered. In 2004 it was estimated that the population possibly was as low as 8000 individuals. One of the main threats is human consumption. The fungal disease chytridiomycosis has also had a dramatic effect on the population. Locally, it is known as the Mountain Chicken for its large size and the fact it is hunted for food.

The project is developed by BrightSource Energy and Bechtel. The largest investor in the project is NRG Energy, a generating company based in Princeton, N.J., that has put in $300 million. The project has received a $1.375 billion loan guarantee from the United States Department of Energy. It will deploy 347,000 heliostat mirrors focusing solar energy on boilers located on centralized solar power towers.
