The park is named for the Tuscarora Indians, who lived in the area, following the Tuscarora War in North Carolina, until they were forced out by the colonial settllers of Pennsylvania. Discovered in 1916, and having a cumulative production of over 158 million barrels (25,100,000 m3) of oil, it is the 37th largest oil field in California and the second largest in Ventura County (after the Ventura field). As of the beginning of 2009, it retains 316 active wells, and has an estimated 1.4 million barrels (220,000 m3) of oil remaining recoverable with current technology. Vintage Production, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum, was the largest operator as of 2009.

He is currently the head football coach at Harvard University, a position he has held since the 1994 season. Murphy served as the head coach at the University of Maine from 1987 to 1988 and at the University of Cincinnati from 1989 to 1993. Under his guidance, the Harvard Crimson have had ten consecutive winning seasons. Murphy`s 120 wins at Harvard are the most in the program`s history. His 2004 squad went 10–0 and was the only undefeated team in Division I-AA that season.
