Shakamaxon was ordered on 4 November 1863 and laid down at the Philadelphia Navy Yard before the end of the year. Since the ship was still on the ways at the end of the American Civil War, work on her was suspended on 30 November 1865. She was renamed Hecla on 15 June 1869 and again renamed Nebraska on 10 August 1869. She conducts music workshops around the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, including a workshop she created called "Building a Vocal Community: Singing in the African American Tradition".
