The approximately 36 miles (58 km) long stream rises on the western side of South Pass and flows into the Little Sandy Creek near Farson, Wyoming. As the name implies, the stream starts just to the west of the Continental Divide and so is on the "Pacific" side of the divide. The waters from the stream eventually flow into the Pacific ocean via the Green River and Colorado River. The stream is a notable landmark on the Oregon, California and Mormon emigration trails.

Set in medieval Japan, the novel tells the story of Takiko, the 11-year-old daughter of a slain samurai warrior. Takiko’s mother remarries Goro, a gentle but unattractive potter/dwarf, whom Takiko fears. When she matures into adulthood, Takiko is able to find employment in the court of the Japanese emperor and falls in love with an enemy spy-Hideo. Eventually, she returns home and is able to reconcile her feelings towards Goro.

An ice strengthened version of the British "Basset" class trawler minesweepers, Comox was initially assigned to the west coast. In World War II, she was reassigned as a minesweeper and harbour defence vessel for Halifax Harbour. Along with her sister ship HMCS Fundy, Comox rescued survivors of the torpedoed Liberty ship SS Martin Van Buren on January 15, 1945. Fundy was decommissioned in 1945, sold in 1946 and converted to the tug boat Sung Ming.
