The Battle of Abu Tellul (also known as the Affair of Abu Tellul) was fought on 14 July 1918 during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of World War I between German and Ottoman Empire forces which attacked the front line of the British Empire garrison protecting their occupation of the Jordan Valley. The valley had been occupied by a regiment of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) from February 1918 when Jericho was captured. Following the two unsuccessful Egyptian Expeditionary Force`s Transjordan attacks in March and in April the valley became the responsibility of the commander of the Desert Mounted Corps.

Originally laid down as the cargo ship SS Hawaiian Planter in 1941 at Newport News, Virginia, by the Newport News Shipbuilding Dry Dock Company for the Matson Line, she was purchased by the Navy on 16 February 1943 and renamed Briareus, then designated a repair ship AR-12. She was converted to naval service by the Bethlehem Steel Company at Brooklyn, New York and commissioned on 15 November 1943 with Commander John F. Warris in command.

It has a population of approximately 38,000 with a land area of 1.324 km2 (0.5 sq mi). Once part of the municipality of Juazeiro it grew with the construction of the Sobradinho Dam and the flooding of the huge Sobradinho Reservoir. With the creation of the reservoir, the inhabitants of four cities and thirty villages had to leave their homes. In all 11,853 families (more than 70 thousand people) abandoned the old towns before the end of 1977. Of this total, 5,806 families remained in rural lots around the lake and 3,851 families moved to the new towns, including Sobradino.
