1952 Beit Jala Raid

The Beit Jala Raid was an Israeli attack on Beit Jala, an Arab town on the border between Jordan and Israel (today part of the Palestinian territories) on January 6, 1952. Seven Palestinian Arab civilians were killed in the attack. Based on leaflets dropped at the site it was presumed to be revenge for the rape and murder of a Jewish girl by infiltrators from Beit Jala, even though international investigators found no evidence of Jordanian infiltration.

The 1967 Oil Embargo began on June 6, 1967, one day after the beginning of the Six-Day War, with a joint Arab decision to deter any countries from supporting Israel militarily. Several Middle Eastern countries eventually limited their oil shipments, some embargoing only the United States and the United Kingdom, while others placed a total ban on oil exports. The Oil Embargo did not significantly decrease the amount of oil available in the United States or any affected European countries due mainly to a lack of solidarity and uniformity in embargoing specific countries. The embargo was effectively ended on September 1 with the issuance of the Khartoum Resolution.

HMCS Loos

Built by the Kingston Shipbuilding Company and launched in September 1917, she was commissioned in August 1918. Decommissioned in 1920, Loos was transferred to the Department of Marine and Fisheries, where she was used as a lighthouse supply ship. Sold in 1937, she was re-acquired by the RCN in December 1940 and converted to a gate vessel, spending part of the war at Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Returned to Marine Industries Limited in 1945, Loos was broken up in 1949.

HMCS Givenchy

Built at Montreal by Canadian Vickers, Givenchy was commissioned in June 1918 and paid off at Esquimalt, British Columbia in August 1919. Transferred to the Department of Marine and Fisheries, she served as a fisheries protection vessel before being returned to the RCN in April 1939. Used mainly as an accommodation ship, Givenchy was in commission between June 1940 and December 1943. After being sold in September 1946, Givenchy was probably broken up in the United States in 1953.

Named after the Battle of Messines, she was built by Polson Iron Works, in Toronto, Ontario. Commissioned on 13 November 1917, she was handed over to the Department of Marine and Fisheries following her 1920 decommissioning. Converted to a lightship, like sister ships HMCS St. Eloi, HMCS St. Julien, and HMCS Vimy, Messines was designated Lightship No. 3, and was ultimately scrapped in 1962.
