During the period of 1848–1850 it was commanded by Robert FitzRoy. On 15 April 1854 the Arrogant was one of a number of Royal Navy ships that captured the Russian brig Patrioten. The Arrogant served during the Crimean War which lasted from 1854 through to 1856. During this time, two of the ship`s company, Lieutenant John Bythesea and stoker William Johnstone won Victoria Crosses after they went ashore in one of the ship`s boats, and intercepted Russian soldiers carrying mailbags. They then forced the soldiers back to the ship along with the mailbags.
